Nine Solutions for Political Corruption
Selected by Dylan Ratigan.
The Brennan Center argues that concentrated private wealth and weakened public safeguards have created a political system vulnerable to corruption and declining public trust. Its reform program begins with political money: restoring the government's ability to set campaign-finance limits, restricting donations by federal contractors, requiring disclosure of dark-money funding and expanding public financing so candidates can compete without depending on large private donors.
The remaining proposals focus on conduct in office. They include stronger and more uniform federal ethics rules, an independent enforcement body, enforceable limits under the Constitution's Emoluments Clauses, restrictions on self-serving presidential pardons and a ban on congressional stock trading paired with higher legislative pay. Together, the nine measures are presented as a practical institutional agenda rather than a single cure for corruption.
