Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation
Selected by Dylan Ratigan.
The U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory distinguishes social isolation—the objective lack of relationships and regular interaction—from loneliness, the subjective distress created when a person’s actual relationships do not meet their needs. It presents social connection as a major determinant of health: isolation and loneliness are associated with higher risks of premature death, while insufficient connection is also linked to heart disease, stroke, anxiety, depression and dementia.
The advisory proposes a six-pillar national strategy: strengthen social infrastructure, enact pro-connection public policy, mobilize the health sector, reform digital environments, deepen research and public understanding, and cultivate a culture of connection. It assigns roles to government, health systems, technology companies, schools, workplaces, community organizations and individuals, treating connection as public infrastructure rather than a purely private concern.
